Our trip from Cochin to Goa was 6 days of sheer hell-headwinds, rough seas and equipment failures. Starter battery turned into a teapot, complete with steam and the anchor windlass control ceased to function. We had to make an emergency fuel stop in Mangalore. The authorities made a special one-time authorization to buy fuel which was much appreciated. They load iron oxide in the port at Mangalore so in only a day at anchor our decks went from white to rusty red...

We took a short trip inland to Belgaum, where my great-grandfather Arnold Henry Grant Kemball was born in 1861. Thanks to Lt. Colonel(Retd.) A. M. Gnanakan, Lt. Colonel (Retd.) Alvares and Major General (Retd.) S. C. Gupta, VrC for helping me imagine military life in Belgaum in the late 1800's.
