St. Jean to Paris by canal
Updated December 7/05
From St. Jean de Losnes to Paris
We spent a few days at the H20 marina rebuilding our diesel heater and getting over our jet lag before we headed off on the Saone River.
Emma activating our first automatic lock. After she turns the pole at the entrance we wait until the light turns green to enter. Once inside we lifted another pole to close the gate and start the cycle.
Friends asked for food pictures so here goes:
cheese shop at Auxonne market
roast chicken to go
final shopping stop at the boulangerie
Once we turned onto the Marne the canal got narrower
start of a 4.5 km tunnel just before Langres
almost through...
surprisingly a few trees still had leaves
Because one of the locks on the direct route to Paris was still under
repair we had to detour up through Reims. Incredible cathedral and interesting tour of the G. H. MUMM Champagne Cave.
It snowed the next day but luckily it only lasted a day.
fogged in on the Oise Canal
the quintessential Paris site
passing around the L'Ile de Cite
Notre Dame
our home for the winter
